Columbia, Maryland, is a thoughtfully designed community in Howard County. It comprises 10 distinct villages and is home to over 104,000 residents. Origins of Columbia, MD

Before European colonization in the 1600s, the land that now makes up Columbia, Maryland, was home to indigenous groups such as the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples, who used the area for farming and hunting. Columbia was founded by James W. Rouse, a Maryland native who began his career in housing finance before becoming a prominent developer. Rouse initially built shopping centers and malls, eventually forming The Rouse Company in 1966. His vision for Columbia was a planned community that balanced economic growth with social responsibility, influenced by his Christian faith and a commitment to urban renewal. Rouse sought to create a city that fostered diversity, opportunity, and quality of life, setting the stage for Columbia’s development.

Land Acquisition and Planning

In 1962, Rouse and his company began acquiring land in Howard County to build Columbia. To maintain secrecy and control costs, the land was purchased through various shell companies, amassing 14,178 acres from 140 owners. Rouse faced challenges, including zoning approvals and resistance from some residents and officials. However, after extensive planning and community outreach, the project moved forward. The Columbia plan emphasized comprehensive urban planning, integrating residential, commercial, and recreational spaces with a focus on inclusivity. This vision ultimately received approval in 1965, allowing construction to begin.

Unveiling and Growth

Columbia was officially unveiled as a groundbreaking planned community on June 21, 1967. The city was designed around a series of villages, each with amenities such as schools, shopping centers, and recreational facilities. Notable innovations included open classrooms, interfaith centers, and the Columbia Medical Plan, an early version of a health maintenance organization (HMO). Columbia quickly attracted a diverse population, but financial challenges arose, requiring additional funding from investors. Over time, Columbia evolved into a thriving community, though debates over zoning and infrastructure funding persisted. By the 1980s and 1990s, Columbia’s ownership transitioned through various companies, with the Howard Hughes Corporation taking over in the 2010s to guide future development.
